You have signed up for your swim lesson (yay!), you are motivated (double yay!), and now comes the surprisingly tricky part: What do I bring to swim class? and more importantly; what do I do before and after class to feel my best?
At Well Cares Swimming, we have seen everything from full-on scuba gear to people forgetting their swimsuits. So here’s your simple, no-nonsense guide to preparing for your swim session whether you are 6 or 60.
The Swim Bag
– Swimsuit
Let’s start with the obvious. Wear something comfortable that stays in place. If you are tugging at your suit more than you are kicking, it’s time for a different one.
– Towel
A big, fluffy one if you like comfort. A small, fast drying one if you like efficiency. Bonus points if it doesn’t smell like last summer’s beach trip.
– Flip-flops or pool shoes
Avoid slippery pool decks and funky locker room floors. Protect those precious toes.
– Water bottle
Yes, you’re in water, but swimming is thirsty work. Stay hydrated. At Well Cares Swimming, we will provide you with an awesome bottle.
– Goggles (optional but recommended)
We love seeing your eyes light up with confidence not burn from chlorine. Well-fitted goggles can make a huge difference, especially for beginners. At Well Cares Swimming, we will provide you with one.
– Swim Cap (optional)
Especially helpful if you have got long hair or want to avoid post swim tangle trauma.
– Clean underwear
Trust us, it’s easy to forget. You’ll thank yourself later.
- Self-Care Before the Splash
– Eat Something Light
Swimming on a full stomach = regret. Swimming on an empty stomach = zero energy. Aim for a banana, yogurt, or a light sandwich about an hour before class.
– Shower before you swim
Yes, we know it sounds redundant. But a quick rinse helps keep the pool clean, your skin prepped, and your body awake.
– Go to the bathroom first
Again: trust us.
- How to take care of yourself mentally
If you’re nervous or had a rough day, take a deep breath before stepping into the pool area. You are here to learn, not to impress anyone.
Before class:
– Take a deep breath.
– Remind yourself: “I don’t have to be perfect. I just have to show up.”
– Visualize floating. It helps, really.
During class:
– Laugh at yourself. Everyone splashes awkwardly sometimes.
– Listen to your body. If you’re tired, slow down.
– Celebrate tiny wins. “I floated for 3 seconds!” is a BIG deal.
After class:
– Eat something nourishing. You’ve burned more energy than you think.
– Stretch a little. Shoulders and calves will thank you.
– Reflect: What felt better than last time? What was fun? What surprised you?
- After swim TLC
Rinse off
Chlorine is not a long-term moisturizer. A quick rinse removes chemicals and helps keep skin and hair healthy.
Moisturize
A little lotion goes a long way. Your skin will thank you for not leaving it parched.
Snack smart
Swimming burns more calories than you think. Grab a piece of fruit, a granola bar, or something nourishing to refuel your energy.
Reflect on your progress
Yes, seriously. Even if all you did was float for five seconds, that’s a win. At Well Cares Swimming, we believe every small step in the water is a giant leap in confidence.
- Bonus: emotional care counts too
Didn’t nail the backstroke? Panicked during a drill? That’s okay. Swimming is a vulnerable, emotional experience. Be kind to yourself.
At Well Cares Swimming, we’re not just about strokes and technique, we are about helping you grow, overcome fears, and feel good in your body. Your journey is uniquely yours, and we are here to support every part of it.
